Sustainability Journey

At Driftaway Queenstown we are committed to creating a refreshing holiday park experience like no other.

At our new lakeside setting, we have reimagined the way you experience your Queenstown holiday. Our modern, family-friendly location is five minutes from everything you need and nestled cosily at the edge of the breathtaking Frankton Arm of Lake Wakatipu.

You can relax in a villa, tent or campervan knowing that while you’re spending your days in nature, we are committed to maintaining a healthy respect for the environment in everything that we do.

Reducing our impact on the environment

Solar Array

The roof of our facility hub is proudly adorned with 54x320W Solar Panels produce over 18,000kWh of electricity per year. This will offset 20% of our yearly energy consumption.

Waste Water Heat Recovery

Wastewater from hot showers is run through a heat exchanger, where heat is captured and used to warm cold water. The benefit here is less time/energy to get fresh water up to temperature.

EV Vehicle Charging

We are entering the electric vehicle era here in NZ. In order to prepare for this all of our accommodation units have an EV charging station that is free of charge for guests staying with us.

Laundry Drier Heat Recovery

Like the wastewater heat recovery, this method recovers heat from the hot air produced by our laundry. Hot air is ducted into the intake of the water heat pump units and is used to naturally warm the water, which subsequently requires less energy to heat it.

Cleaning with a lighter footprint

We use Resolv cleaning pods and refillable bottles. A typical cleaning brand sells you up to 90% water in a single use bottle. Shipping water round the country along with excess waste doesn't make sense to us!

Future EV Motorhome charging

Driftaway Queenstown is ready to convert to EV campervans when the time comes. At the time of construction, we installed all the inground infrastructure ready for a simple plug change when we need to convert to catering for EV motorhomes.

Uniforms

We love our Driftaway kit! Not only does it look super cool but are also ethically produced. It is made from Organic, ethically produced cotton which is part of the Better Cotton Initiative. Our logos are printed with ink that is certified to be free from harmful chemicals and heavy metals. This certification ensures the effect the dyeing industry has on the environment is minimised.

Dream Green Bedding

We are proud to use Vendella Dream Green bedding and pillows at Driftaway. This luxurious product not only guarantees the best night sleep but it made from recycled plastic bottles. Bottles are sterilised, then crushed into small flakes which are then spun into yarn. This yarn is transformed into premium, luxuriously soft, hypoallergenic microfibre. To date our bedding has come from over 5000 recycled plastic bottles.

Smoke/Vape & Fossil Fuel Free

Driftaway Queenstown is proud to be not only Fossil Fuel Free, but also Smoke and Vape free.

100% Renewable energy Supplier

We are proud to use 100% renewable energy by using Meridian Energy as our power supplier.

Monitoring our energy usage

We track and monitor our energy usage as well as waste in order for us to actively reduce these each year

Tiaki Promise

Tiaki means to care for people and place. The Tiaki promise is an initiative by Tourism New Zealand to show our commitment to preserve New Zealand for current and future generations.
As visitors to New Zealand, our guests also have a responsibility to keep our home beautiful. Our team at Driftaway Queenstown are passionate about this movement and have put together some tips below for our guests to show their support for the Tiaki Promise.

Ways you can reduce your impact when travelling beautiful New Zealand

Reusable Shopping Bags

Purchase some reusable shopping bags at the beginning of your holiday for any trips to the supermarket or shops. As us Kiwis say, they're "cheap as chips" and they'll come in super handy on your holiday.

Reusable Coffee Cups

If you are anything like us, coffee is a staple in our diet. Bring with you from home or purchase a reusable coffee cup to avoid single use cups. They keep your coffee hotter for longer too!

Bottled Water

We are lucky enough to have some of the best tap water in the world here in NZ. There is no need to buy bottled water so we recommend filling up a drink bottle when travelling. Refill Nz has free water fill stations all over the country, click here for locations.

Recycle

When travelling NZ it is important to take only memories and leave only footprints. Towns and cities in New Zealand have rubbish and recycle facilities easily accessible to the public. Be a legend and put your rubbish and recycling in the bin.

Keep to the path

If you're planning on taking a walk in our beautiful native bush, help to preserve our flora and fauna by sticking to assigned track.

Wildlife

If you come across any wildlife, please don't approach or feed it. Human food is not meant for animals and many of our wildlife have their own special diet. Remember New Zealand is their home too and we need to respect their space.

Manaakitanga and good ol' Kiwi hospitality

Understanding New Zealand - and New Zealanders - means understanding the influence of Māori people and culture.

The Maori people have inhabited New Zealand for thousands of years and take great pride in the Maori culture as well as the land and resources that come with it. When traveling to New Zealand from overseas it is important to respect and embrace Maori values, customs and of course, the land.

Manaakitanga – Refers to showing hospitality, kindness and respect for others. This is a value we would hope all New Zealanders live by – call us bias but we think Southern hospitality is second to none. Our team at Driftaway Queenstown prides themselves in showing respect and making our visitors feel at home during their stay with us. New Zealand welcomes international visitors from all over the world, so it is important that visitors also take responsibility to show tolerance towards other cultures.

Understanding kiwi culture

We are quite certain that you will very quickly realise that kiwis are extremely relaxed, but there are a few social guidelines you may not be familiar with.

1. Never sit on a surface used for preparing or eating food.

2. Keep to the left when walking on a footpath.

3. Kiwis are very friendly, don’t be afraid to smile or say a quick “hello” to passers-by.

4. Kiwis are used to wide open spaces. We recommend respecting each other’s bubbles, so make the most of all the extra space.

5. Part of the kiwi charm is a great sense of humour which usually comes in the form of extreme sarcasm. We love to have a laugh and don’t take anything too seriously!
